HTML history

Simplified HTML’s journey from early code to HTML5 in a short presentation for the Sainsbury’s Content team.

Brief: The content team responsible for creating banners and pages for the Sainsbury’s site often had little or no experience working directly with HTML. To help bridge the gap, I put together a short presentation that explained the evolution of HTML and CSS, and how the shift to HTML5 introduced new structures and standards.

Skills used:  Presenting | HTML | HTML5 | CSS3

Process

We followed TH_NK’s structured approach — starting with Foundation Design, then moving through 11 Design Sprints before launch.

  • Researched the key milestones in HTML’s development.

  • Highlighted how early versions handled structure vs. style, and why CSS became essential.

  • Showed the improvements in HTML5 for layout, accessibility, and multimedia support.

  • Kept the session accessible for non-technical audiences, with visual examples and simplified explanations.

Outcome

The presentation gave the content team a clearer understanding of how HTML and CSS worked together, helping them feel more confident when working with code snippets or structured content. It also set a baseline of knowledge that supported smoother collaboration between design, content, and development teams.
